I create one-of-a-kind clay, drawing, and mixed media pieces in my Tin Bin Studio on East Lake Okoboji, near the City of Spirit Lake and in the heart of the Iowa Great Lakes.
For 34 years I taught art to children of all ages in Iowa public schools. After retirement in 2005, I continued to teach private classes for children and adults and opened Art on 16th, an art gallery and studio in Olde Town Spirit Lake. After eight years of working together with local artists and art fans, I sold the business to have more freedom to do my own work. In 2016 my wife Sheryl and I moved to our new home, which we continue to personalize thanks to all my tools and ideas. Today I’m still developing my work areas at the new house and plan to create lots of new work in my Tin Bin Studio. Sheryl is my manager.
In the last few years, my work has taken several directions: funky and mostly non-functional teapots and sculptures with mixed media embellishments; abstract drawings started with drawing "tools," such as remote-controlled cars and robots, followed by meticulous handwork; and colorful abstract paintings with my custom frames. I like to combine my interests in drawing and clay by drawing shapes and designs with various paint materials on my ceramic pieces. I try not to be limited by traditional form, surface, or decoration to express my personal esthetic.

My number one artistic goal is to satisfy my own sense of what makes a piece entertaining, inventive, and personal. If others get a kick out of my work, "It doesn’t get any better than that!"
An important early influence on my art was studying under Bauhaus-trained, master potter Marguerite Wildenhain at Pond Farm Pottery in Guerneville, CA in the summers of 1973 and 1974. Prior to that experience, I earned a Master’s degree in Art Education with an emphasis in ceramics from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and a BS in Art from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, where I also earned All-Conference honors as the football quarterback. I am designated as a teaching artist with the Iowa Arts Council.
My work is available year-round at Art on 16h in Olde Town Spirit Lake and May-September at Summerwind Gallery in Arnolds Park, Iowa. See my work on Facebook at Hank Hall Artist or call/text me at 712-330-6007.
